A biomarker is a biological marker or indicator of a certain process happening in the body. If you have a brain tumour, a biomarker test may be used to look at the genes associated with your type of tumour.

What are biomarkers?

Biomarkers are biological markers that are found in the tissues and cells of the body. They might be used to see how the body is reacting to a condition or disease, like a brain tumour. Biomarkers can also be useful for seeing how someone’s body is responding to treatment.

Biomarker tests for brain tumours

With brain tumours, biomarker tests can be used to see if your tumour has certain changes in its genes that may be used to:

help diagnose the type of tumour you have predict how fast your tumour will grow suggest how you may respond to certain treatments, such as chemotherapy[1] and, possibly, radiotherapy[2].
