The STAR technique was initially described by Colombo et al in 2005.7 It was used in 31 consecutive patients with native coronary artery CTOs (87% in the right coronary artery) in whom conventional crossing failed; 21 patients (87%) had failed prior CTO PCI attempts. Procedural success was achieved in 30 patients (97%), 21 of whom had complete success (defined as TIMI 3 flow in most distal branches).
