 Basic periodontal examination

(BPE)

(periodontal screening and recording (PSR)) A periodontal screening system which identifies patients who require a more detailed periodontal examination. It is carried out using a World Health Organization or Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) probe using a probing force of 20–25gm. The CPITN-E probe has one dark band 2mm in width located 3.5–5.5mm from the probe tip; the CPITN-C probe has an additional 3mm dark band located 8.5–11.5mm from the probe tip.The teeth in the mouth are divided into six mouth divisions or sextants (the third permanent molars are excluded). The probe is introduced into the gingival crevice (sulcus) and walked around the buccal, labial, lingual, and palatal surfaces. Only the highest score for all the teeth in each sextant is recorded. The sextant score is recorded according to codes.
