Exposure to contaminated needlestick is one of the most dangerous and deadly occupational hazards. Blood borne pathogens may result in hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Needlestick is the occupational injury that occurs mostly among nurses. The causes of needlestick injury include improper needle placement, recap of needles and removal of needles. Literature review indicated that stop the practice of recapping needles after use, following needle disposal procedures, and proper training can prevent needlestick injury. This article examines the incidence, reporting, risk factors and preventive strategies of needlesticks. Increased nurses, knowledge in needlestick prevention will decrease injury and establish a safe working environment.
