Glaucoma is a progressive optic nerve neuropathy characterized by loss of retinal ganglion cells and their axons, causing irreversible vision loss. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the most significant risk factor and remains, to this day, the only parameter for which treatment has proven to decrease the risk, incidence, and progression of glaucoma.
