Early detection gives infants born with a hearing deficit a better chance to learn how to communicate and to develop normally. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics[1], three of every 1,000 newborns have some degree of hearing loss.

Newborn hearing screeners – nurses, technicians, audiology assistants and sometimes volunteers -- conduct infant hearing health tests, as explained by the American Academy of Audiology. Early detection and intervention programs are found in all 50 states, according to the National Institutes of Health.[2]
