Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) refers to a group of inherited disorders in which abnormalities of the photoreceptors (rods and cones) of the retina lead to progressive visual loss. RP is classified as nonsyndromic, or "simple" (not affecting other organs or tissues); syndromic[1] (affecting other neurosensory systems such as hearing); or systemic (affecting multiple tissues). This overview focuses on nonsyndromic forms of RP.
