On 19th December 2018, it was announced that textured breast implants made by the manufacturer Allergan were to be removed from the market in Europe. This was due to the Allergan breast implants being linked to a rare form of lymphoma, called Breast Implant Associated-Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

This move followed advice from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS)[1] on 16th July 2016 which stated that: “Members are advised that all patients seeking breast augmentation should be informed about BIA-ALCL, stressing that this is a very rare condition, which in most cases is readily treatable.”
